From Behind the Mask by Pam Warren with Gareth Owen
London: Biteback Publishing, 2014
Hardback with Dust Jacket over Black boards with Silver titling to Spine
Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: She was not expected to survive. She became the lady in the mask. In October 1999, Pam Warrens life was turned on its head when she sustained horrific injuries in the Paddington rail crash. The casualties numbered thirty-one dead and over five hundred injured. Pam underwent scores of operations to rebuild her burnt body, and had to wear a plastic mask over her face for twenty-three hours a day over an eighteen-month period. Unwittingly, she became the public face of the disaster.

Over a decade on from that terrible event, From Behind the Mask charts the true inside story of Pams journey from victim to survivor and campaigner. Following the crash she became the UKs leading spokesperson for improving rail safety, battling with rail management executives and the government and winning. She was branded a troublemaker, but Pam and fellow members of the Paddington Survivors Group helped bring about great improvements on our railways. For years Pam remained focused on that campaign. Now, for the first time, she can tell us all what really happened. It is an inspirational story of determination and courage.

On Decoration by David Brett
London: Lutterworth Press, 1992
Hardback with Dust Jacket over Burgundy boards with Gilt titling to Spine
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams;

From the cover: This absorbing study surveys the developments in decorative design from the 1830s to the 1950s, showing how the modern age has affected the status of decoration and examining the role of ornament in a rapidly changing industrial society.

Arranged in three sections, the book opens with an introductory essay which looks at the cultural background of the discourse of decoration, bringing into play two major strands of decorative theory, and looking at the changing natures of modernism and traditionalism. The central section of the book is composed of pictorial examples, arranged in order of chronological development, from the most significant trends in taste and fashion. The concluding postscript expands on the origins and development of the two opposing strands identified, which the author defines as normative and critical schools.

Rubicon: The Fifth Dimension of Biology alights on the shelves of the splendid Fact or Fable Book Shop in Peasedown St. John

Rubicon: The Fifth Dimension of Biology by Anthony K. Campbell
London: Duckworth, 1994
Hardback with Dust Jacket over Black boards with Gilt titling to Spine
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: Rubicon is a startling new theory of biology. It redefines the science in a revolutionary new framework, enabling us to tackle the major problems confronting medicine and the environment.

The central argument of Anthony Campbells new thesis is that all real biological phenomena involve quantum leaps, or rubicons, the transition between each state taking anything from a fraction of a second to a million years of evolution.

Much has been learnt since the word biology the science of life was first used nearly two hundred years ago. But Rubicon argues that we still have not explained what life is really about. What happens when we get an inspired idea, or a headache, or we lose our temper? How can some people carry the AIDS or hepatitis virus without being ill and yet to others they are lethal? What really caused the mysterious disappearance of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago? Throughout nearly 4,000 million years of evolution rubicons abound, from individual molecules up to complete ecosystems; yet they have either been ignored or at least not been explained. An exciting technology using genetic engineering now enables us to view the chemical basis of Rubicon in individual cells.

Rubicon is aimed at a wide audience, and will also be thought-provoking to students and professional scientists. Difficult concepts are explained through analogy, humour and experiment. The book adopts a fresh, scholarly approach to biology and medicine, and recreates pathways of discovery made by distinguished scientists from the past. It knocks several icons on the head: Caia, the misconception of homeostasis, contemporary evolutionary theory and the scientific philosophy of Karl Popper. It also gives a new perspective on Darwin. If we are to solve the problems facing man and the environment in the four time-and-space dimensions, biology and medicine must first identify the fifth dimension Rubicon.
